Moody Center hosts thrilling night of experimental music, dance

Local arts aficionados from the Rice community and the Houston area gathered at the Moody Center for the Arts on April 14 for the latest iteration of the “Dimensions Variable” programming series. This one-of-a-kind evening of experimental music and dance performances marked yet another unexpected interdisciplinary event during the Moody’s fifth anniversary year.

Raymond Brochstein ’56, the philanthropist, millwork magnate and architect for whom Rice’s Raymond and Susan Brochstein Pavilion was named, died March 25 at his home in Houston. He was 89.

In 1984, Michael Heizer’s massive triptych of pink granite monoliths, “45°, 90°, 180°,” became the first major commission of public art on campus. These days, it’s common to find Rice students spreading out and enjoying the weather on nice days atop the flat surface of the 180-degree monolith, with its pleasant view of the Engineering Quad.
