It is with great sadness that I share with you the unexpected passing of our esteemed colleague, Triny Carranza, on May 7. Her sudden departure has left a profound sense of loss that will be felt deeply by the Rice community.

Matthews, Wise to receive ARA's Gold Medal at 2023 Laureates Awards
At the Association of Rice Alumni’s 2023 Laureates Awards ceremony May 4, the group will bestow its highest honor — the Gold Medal Award — to Kathleen Shive Matthews and Scott W. Wise. The annual ceremony also honored several prominent alumni with the Distinguished Alumni Award and several members of the Rice community with the Meritorious Service Award.

Susan McIntosh, the Herbert S. Autrey Professor of Anthropology, was celebrated April 18 for her 40-plus-year career at Rice.

The renowned public policy expert examined structural racism as the driver of inequality — not just for people of color, but for everyone.

AMPosium! draws big crowd at BRC
Rice University’s Office of STEM Engagement and ConocoPhillips welcomed 150 past and current participants in the ConocoPhillips Applied Mathematics Program (AMP!) to AMPosium! March 25 at the BioScience Research Collaborative. The yearlong program offers innovative strategies to science and mathematics teachers in grades 5 through 9.
Rice announces launch of Budget Transformation Initiative
I am excited to announce the launch of Rice’s Budget Transformation Initiative, co-led by Provost Amy Dittmar and Vice President for Finance and Administration Kelly Fox. The purpose of the initiative is to build transparency and an understanding of the university’s budget as well as design, develop and implement a new campus budget model built for Rice by Rice leaders and stakeholders that will better reflect our mission, values and priorities.
President Reginald DesRoches joined HOOTS (the High Order of Owl Tailgating Society) in the Fondren Library colonnade for breakfast tacos Feb. 24. Proceeds from sales benefited the HOOTS scholarship fund.

DesRoches takes part in Ten Across Summit
President Reginald DesRoches spoke about how Rice works with partners and institutions across the region to solve some of the most pressing challenges of our time Jan. 11 at the Ten Across Summit , which brought leaders from cities along the Interstate 10 corridor — from Los Angeles to Jacksonville, Florida — to Houston to seek solutions to social, economic and climate challenges.

Welcome back to our beautiful campus! I hope you had a festive, restful winter break with family and friends. Paula and I enjoyed having all of our children in town under one roof to celebrate the holidays and ring in the new year. We both hope you, like us, feel rejuvenated and that you’re looking forward to the many exciting things we have going on at Rice in 2023.
