Each year, Rice honors members of the university community who have served students through outstanding teaching, dedication and service. Here are recipients of some of this year's awards.
Shepherd School opera, chamber orchestra perform ‘L'incoronazione di Poppea’
The Rice University Shepherd School Opera and Chamber Orchestra performed their spring opera production, Monteverdi’s “L'incoronazione di Poppea” (The Coronation of Poppea) April 14 and 16 in Brockman Hall for Opera’s Morrison Theater.

Last month, Il Pirata Records released “DO NOT LAMENT,” the recording debut of Shepherd School alum Rebecca Scout Nelson, a vocalist and baroque violinist. Richie Hawley, a professor of clarinet at the Shepherd School, is president of the record label.
Rice University’s Shepherd School Contemporary Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra will wrap up their 2022-2023 performing seasons with concerts on April 19 and 21, respectively. Both concerts will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Stude Concert Hall.

Rice composition professor Pierre Jalbert’s new work has New York premiere at Carnegie Hall
The Houston-based Apollo Chamber Players performed Rice Shepherd School composition professor Pierre Jalbert’s “L'esprit du Nord” and additional works written by Rice alums in “A Universal Celebration of Storytelling, Outer Space, and Folk Music” March 9 at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall.
Grammy Award-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride gives Shepherd School master class
Eight-time Grammy Award-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride visited Rice’s Shepherd School of Music for a master class with double bass students March 3.
On Feb. 24 and 25, Rice University composition professor Anthony Brandt collaborated with University of Houston professor Jose Luis Contreras-Vidal and Performing Arts Houston to premiere his newly commissioned chamber piece “Diabelli 200” at the Wortham Center.
Shih-Hui Chen, a professor of composition and theory at The Shepherd School of Music , was selected as a 2023 music award winner by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Rice alum Cristian Măcelaru to lead Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra in March 4 symphony concert
A visit from internationally renowned guest conductor and Rice University Shepherd School alum Cristian Măcelaru coupled with a blend of traditional and new classical works are among the highlights planned for the school’s chamber and symphony orchestra performances March 3 and 4, respectively.
The celebrated French Ensemble intercontemporain will make its Texas debut March 23 at an event presented by DACAMERA, in partnership with Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music . The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Alice Pratt Brown Hall’s Stude Concert Hall on the Rice campus.
New electronic sound and light composition to debut at James Turrell Skyspace
“RETURN,” a brand-new sound and light composition by electronic music composer Yvette Janine Jackson, is set to debut at the James Turrell “Twilight Epiphany” Skyspace on Rice’s campus the evening of March 3.
