Rice recently welcomed the new parliament of Owls to campus, including more than 1,100 undergraduate students and 1,400 graduate students, at the President’s Welcome.
Every O-Week, the university’s weeklong orientation program, Rice Connections offers the opportunity for students from different faith traditions, cultural backgrounds and more to come together and meet their freshman peers.

On the second morning of O-Week, Rice University’s Class of 2028 assembled in Tudor Fieldhouse to hear advice from a three-person panel of professors who shared their secrets for success — both at Rice and beyond. The faculty delivered short, TED Talk-style lectures encouraging new students to stay open to the possibilities the university offers.
“Welcome to Rice!” President Reginald DesRoches exclaimed at the Aug. 18 matriculation ceremony for the Class of 2028. After spending the day helping the new class of freshmen move into its residential colleges, DesRoches and university leadership celebrated the new students’ official entry into Rice at Tudor Fieldhouse to share their advice and support for the upcoming years.
As part of Rice University’s O-Week tradition, student groups welcome the new Owls and their parents to campus. Two groups representing students of color recently hosted events to greet the Rice community.
More than 60 new faculty spent two days in an orientation of their own before starting the fall semester at Rice University. The program was hosted by the Office of Faculty Development.
