For the first Owls After Dark event of the semester, the Rice Student Center partnered with the Doerr Institute for New Leaders to host a late-night Lego building competition Jan. 19 in the Rice Memorial Center’s Grand Hall.

Rice Owls and Houston art lovers were invited Jan. 20 by the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts to campus for the opening reception of “Butterflies,” an original multimedia video and sound installation created by Rice senior Ling DeBellis and University of Houston student composer Antonio Sanz Escallón.

Evelyn Tang, an assistant professor of physics and astronomy and a member of Rice University’s Center for Theoretical Biological Physics, is one of 17 early-career researchers to receive a $50,000 award in the inaugural year of the Scialog: Molecular Basis of Cognition initiative, which will begin with a conference Oct. 12-15 in Tucson, Arizona.

Partnership to develop free education resources for nursing students

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) and Rice University's OpenStax are building on their existing partnership to address staffing shortages in the nursing profession and reduce financial barriers for nursing students. In collaboration with postsecondary institutions in Texas and stakeholders nationwide, OpenStax will launch a comprehensive free online curriculum for nursing education in spring 2024.

President Reginald DesRoches spoke about how Rice works with partners and institutions across the region to solve some of the most pressing challenges of our time Jan. 11 at the Ten Across Summit , which brought leaders from cities along the Interstate 10 corridor — from Los Angeles to Jacksonville, Florida — to Houston to seek solutions to social, economic and climate challenges.
