Two-time Super Bowl champ Justin Reid hosts ‘Tackling Tech’ computer science camp at Ion

The Ion

Tackling Tech Computer Science Camp, featuring Justin Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs, is set to debut starting June 10 at the Ion, Houston’s innovation hub powered by Rice University. The innovative program that runs through June 21 offers high school students an immersive experience in computer science through hands-on projects, professional development workshops and guest speaker sessions.

Tailored for students entering grades 10–12 in the upcoming 2024–25 academic year, this two-week camp covers a wide spectrum of computer programming topics. Led by experienced instructors, participants will delve into foundational principles, cutting-edge subjects, coding, Microsoft fundamentals and artificial intelligence using a project-based approach, ensuring engaging and practical learning.

Reid, a former Houston Texan and founder of the JReid Indeed Foundation, is committed to giving back to the city he considers home. Following the success of Tackling Tech in Kansas City, Reid decided to partner with Rice to offer students a glimpse into the collegiate experience. With instruction from Rice network educators and a campus visit, students will gain exposure to higher education opportunities.

“It is an honor to be in a position to give back. Houston is still home to me, and understanding the importance of technology and how it is changing the world, I want to make sure the kids in Houston I have come to know have an advantage,” Reid said. “Being an industrial engineering major at Stanford University has opened my eyes to so many things and possibilities. I am beyond excited to join forces with Rice University and Ion to make Tackling Tech a reality in Houston.”

In addition to academic pursuits, students will engage in fitness activities and have the chance to create portfolio pieces, earning a certificate of completion personally signed by Reid. This program is made possible by the JReid Indeed Foundation and its Fully Charged initiative, focusing on technology, nutrition and athletics.
