Juneteenth events examine Black leadership and ideas central to the holiday

Rice honored Juneteenth with a discussion series on June 15 to discuss issues of race, racism and injustice. Author Annette Gordon-Reed joined audiences June 20 to discuss her book “On Juneteenth,” which recounts the holiday’s origins and the complex history of Black Texans before, during and after the rise of chattel slavery in the state.
Rice to celebrate Juneteenth with two days of free programming

Spread across two days, programming includes a trio of speaking panels as well as a public lecture.

Class project leads to staff-sponsored initiative for a greener May move-out

Thanks to an initiative two semesters in the making that saw environmentally conscious students partner with campus sustainability leaders and community partners, undergraduates at all of Rice’s 11 residential colleges were able to place unwanted clothing, shoes, linens and other textile-based items in large bins provided to each college by Green City Recycler, a Houston-based recycling company that works to reduce the staggering amount of textile waste that finds its way into landfills each year.
Rice to hold 110th commencement May 5-6

Rice University’s 110th commencement ceremonies will be held May 5 and 6, concluding with the undergraduate ceremony at Rice Stadium the night of May 6 featuring an address from Karine Jean-Pierre, White House press secretary and assistant to the president.
