Rice marks campus sustainability day with afternoon of festivities
Rice’s Office of Sustainability hosted its annual Campus Sustainability Day to highlight and celebrate student organizations, campus departments and community partners that advance sustainability on campus and within Houston.
The Rice University campus gathered together to create a screecher of an event: pumpkin carving. No gourd was left untouched as Owls collected to wreak havoc on the fruit du jour while also sharing their creativity.
Mark Ditman receives inaugural Y. Ping Sun Award for Outstanding Community Engagement
Mark Ditman, a longtime Rice employee who retired June 30 after nearly 29 years of service, is the inaugural recipient of the Y. Ping Sun Award for Outstanding Community Engagement.

Kesem at Rice holds team-bonding ‘Olympics’
Kesem at Rice threw an outdoor competition-themed social to enjoy the fall weather and inspire team-bonding among its many volunteers. The festivities, held on a knoll outside Brochstein Pavilion, included games like cup stacking, face the cookie, spoon-and-egg races and tug of war.

Public artwork by local and national artists celebrated at Rice
Rice’s Moody Center for the Arts celebrated the work of four artists it commissioned for temporary public art programs sited in the heart of campus with an opening reception Oct. 12.

Tibetan Buddhists’ sand mandala on view this week at Rice’s Moody Center
Monks from the Gaden Shartse monastery in India started creating a sand mandala with accompanying rituals today at the Moody Center for the Arts. The mandala will be on view through Oct. 20, when a dissolution ritual will be performed.
Our Heritage Month wraps with day of festivities
Rice closed out Our Heritage Month with a fun-filled day of events at the Rice Memorial Center Oct. 15. The day began in the Grand Hall where nearly 200 people gathered for “Nuestra Herencia,” a program filled with music, dance, fellowship and food.

Laure Prouvost’s immersive solo exhibition on display at Rice’s Moody Center for the Arts
Rice’s Moody Center for the Arts is now showing the work of Laure Prouvost, an award-winning visual artist who has created an immersive experience as her first solo exhibition in Texas. The exhibition, “Above Front Tears Nest in South,” is on display through Dec. 14.
Rice community gathers for campus vigil supporting Israel and Jewish students, faculty and staff
Approximately 200 members of the Rice University community, including Rice President Reginald DesRoches and Provost Amy Dittmar, gathered Oct. 11 in solidarity with the campus’ Jewish students, faculty and staff at an evening vigil for Israel, held at Ray Courtyard outside the Rice Memorial Center.
The Rice University Police Department hosted National Night Out at the Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center Oct. 5. Attendees enjoyed free food, drinks, games and the chance to dunk a police officer in a tub of water.
Rice’s HACER gets its game on during Our Heritage Month
Rice Owls gathered for a night of festivities at Rice Memorial Center during the Hispanic Association for Cultural Enrichment at Rice Game Night, one of the many events planned throughout Our Heritage Month to celebrate Latine culture and traditions and to reflect on past and current social issues on campus Sept. 15-Oct. 15.
