‘Connecting people with possibility’: Rice partners with United Way to support Houston’s most vulnerable

In Houston, nearly half of the citizens are struggling to make ends meet. In fact, 31% of households work but still can’t afford life’s basic necessities, while another 13% live below the federal poverty line, according to the United Way. That equates to almost 45% of the community — people facing challenges that Owls can help address.

The Rice University United Way campaign provides an opportunity to make a real difference. Contributions not only support individuals and families in need, but they also help build a stronger, more resilient Houston for everyone.

“I know firsthand what it’s like to rely on the help of others,” says Ruth López Turley, director of Rice’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research and faculty chair for the Rice United Way campaign committee. “When I was a child, my family received support from organizations like the United Way. That assistance changed our lives, showing me that there are people out there who care — who want to help. It made a profound impact on me, and it’s why I’m so committed to this cause today.”

Rice faculty and staff have long been generous supporters of United Way, helping to improve the lives of thousands of Houstonians. This year, Owls are invited to join that legacy by contributing to the 2025 Rice United Way campaign, which runs through mid-March.

Rice supports the United Way of Greater Houston because of its proven ability to create substantial change. Through investments in education, family stability and the well-being of veterans, United Way helps to transform lives and create lasting community impact.

As a demonstrable example of how every dollar helps, last year’s United Way campaign with Rice donors logged the following results:

  • 359 families received support to achieve financial stability
  • 452 young people were helped to succeed in school
  • 994 people received physical and behavioral health and support
  • 150 people escaped violent situations
  • 865 people received support with basic needs like food, housing and transportation

“What’s most important to know is that every gift of every size really is a meaningful investment in our community’s well-being,” said Amanda McMillian, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Houston. “We are grateful for Rice’s support and look forward to having your continued engagement as partners and champions with United Way. We appreciate Rice’s engagement as part of the broader community because it creates intergenerational impact beyond the hedges of the Rice campus and advances connecting people with possibility.”

Employees can contribute by setting up a payroll deduction at unitedway.rice.edu or io.rice.edu. Donations can be made in the form of payroll contributions, cash, check or credit card. Every gift is impactful and deeply appreciated, no matter the size.

In lieu of monetary contributions, Owls may donate their time and talent for this important cause. On Feb. 10 from 12:30-2 p.m. at the Grand Hall in the Rice Memorial Center, the university will assemble stations to create Valentine’s Day cards for elderly citizens who live in the surrounding area.

This year’s campaign co-chairs are López Turley and Clemente Rodriguez, chief of Rice Police Department.
