Houston tops emerging US biopharma hubs with Rice biotech efforts among factors cited

Houston has been ranked the nation’s top emerging biopharma cluster by Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology News with Rice University’s biotechnology commercialization efforts and a Rice-affiliated startup among the factors the publication cited in the region’s rise.

The ranking, published this month, places Houston first among five emerging U.S. regions outside the country’s 10 largest biopharma clusters. The recognition highlights a growing Houston ecosystem built around academic research, clinical infrastructure, investment and new companies translating scientific discoveries into potential therapies.

“There’s a lot of great talent,” said Omid Veiseh, professor of bioengineering and director of the Rice Biotechnology Launch Pad (RBL). “But the unique advantage we have is we are able to benefit from a lot of unique clinical infrastructure and clinician insights.”

Rice helps move discoveries toward the market

The publication highlighted Duracyte, a Houston startup co-founded by Veiseh and developed through RBL as one example of the region’s growing commercialization activity.

Duracyte is developing technology designed to continuously produce therapeutic proteins inside the body. Its co-founders also include Robert Langer, an Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a prominent biotechnology entrepreneur.

RBL works to move Rice research beyond the laboratory by helping faculty build companies around technologies with commercial and clinical potential. That model adds another layer to Houston’s established strength in biomedical research and patient care.

Houston builds on research and clinical strengths

Houston led the emerging regions in National Institutes of Health funding with 2,262 awards totaling $1.25 billion, according to the publication. The region also ranked second among the emerging hubs in both life sciences employment and laboratory space.

The city’s broader biotechnology infrastructure includes the Texas Medical Center, which brings together major hospitals, research institutions and clinicians. That concentration can give biotechnology companies access to expertise needed to test and advance new approaches.

Moreover, the ranking pointed to major private sector investments, including planned manufacturing facilities from Eli Lilly and Bristol Myers Squibb. Lilly expanded its Houston presence this year by acquiring startup CrossBridge Bio.

A growing national biotechnology footprint

The new ranking reflects a broader shift as biotechnology growth spreads beyond established coastal centers such as Boston and the San Francisco Bay Area, according to Genetic Engineering.

Minneapolis-St. Paul, Denver-Boulder, St. Louis and Dallas-Fort Worth followed Houston among the five emerging regional clusters. The publication evaluated regions using patents, NIH funding, venture capital investment, laboratory space and employment.

For Rice, Houston’s position underscores how university research, startup formation and partnerships across the Texas Medical Center can contribute to a more connected biotechnology ecosystem.

“As Houston attracts new companies, investment and manufacturing capacity, RBL’s role in turning Rice discoveries into startups could help strengthen the city’s standing as a growing center for biotechnology innovation,” Veiseh said.
