At the Feb. 12 Global Insights lunch-and-learn “Know Before You Go: Risk Management and International Travel Insurance Coverage Explained,” Rice faculty and staff gathered to better understand how to prepare for international travel with confidence and clarity. Drawing from the university’s risk management framework, Eno Oregbesan, director of the Office of Risk Management, outlined the “4 Ps” of international travel: proactivity, prevention, preparation and planning for reaction. Together, they form a practical roadmap for anticipating risks before departure and responding effectively if something goes wrong abroad.

The session walked attendees through best practices such as registering all Rice-affiliated travel, reviewing destination-specific guidance, assessing visa and vaccine requirements and understanding local security conditions. Juliana Crim, Rice Global’s global travel safety manager, also highlighted Policy 852 requirements including pre-approval for student travel to elevated-risk locations and the importance of submitting group travel forms when traveling with students.

A significant portion of the discussion focused on Rice’s international insurance coverages. Attendees received an overview of medical, evacuation and travel inconvenience benefits available to students, faculty and staff traveling on Rice business as well as accidental death and dismemberment coverage and foreign general liability protections. The team clarified common exclusions, coverage limits and how to access assistance through Crisis24 while abroad.

Oregbesan reinforced that international risk management is a shared responsibility. From reporting incidents promptly to using university resources before and during travel, the message was clear: preparation is not optional. It is essential to protecting both individuals and the institution while advancing Rice’s global engagement.

Rice Global will host its next Global Insights session on March 5 from 12-1 p.m. in the Welcome Center Presentation Room (Sewall Hall), spotlighting the Rice Global Paris Center. Since launching in May 2022, the Center has hosted more than 50 conferences, offered 22 summer session courses and introduced a new fall semester program while building research partnerships with leading European institutions. Attendees will hear from Paris Center staff and Rice faculty about accomplishments to date, what’s ahead and how the Rice community can engage. Register now.
