As artificial intelligence reshapes global commerce, national security and daily civic life, the defining challenge facing technology leaders is no longer what machines can calculate but how to safely deploy these tools to drive real-world progress without sacrificing trust or security.

Rice University’s Ken Kennedy Institute will explore what it takes to lead the charge in responsible AI and computing as it marks four decades of interdisciplinary research and innovation during its 40th anniversary celebration Nov. 9.

Co-hosted with the Baker Institute for Public Policy’s Civic Scientist Lecture Series, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, the daylong program features keynote addresses by John L. Hennessy, Turing Award winner and Stanford University president emeritus, and Eric Horvitz, chief scientific officer at Microsoft. The lectures are open to the public, but registration is required before Nov. 2.

The event pairs the morning and afternoon lectures with midday poster sessions and panels highlighting cutting-edge Rice AI and computing research, and it concludes with an evening reception.

“This milestone is both a celebration of the institute’s rich history at Rice and a commitment to shaping the breakthroughs of the future,” said David V. Pynadath, the Ken Kennedy Institute’s executive director for research initiatives. “Our goal for the next era of AI and computing is to ensure these technologies are developed and deployed responsibly for the benefit of society.”
