Q: How long have you worked at Rice?
A: Almost three years.
Q: What is your favorite part about working for the university?
A: Being introduced to so many experts with interesting backgrounds. I feel as though I am always learning, whether it is discovering fields of research I didn’t know existed or being challenged with a new skill. There’s hardly a dull moment when meeting someone new here.
Q: What do you want people to know about living in Houston?
A: It’s a city not everyone gets but everyone should give a chance. It took me some time to learn to love Houston, but when you love it, it loves you back. I have made some of the best connections to the people here and have met some of the strongest advocates in this city. Once you find your community here, it’s lifelong.
Q: What do you do in your downtime?
A: I love being outside. I spend my downtime cycling the bayou, planting and soaking up the sun.
Q: What’s your favorite spot on campus to show someone?
A: Walking through the Sallyport always stuns new people. It’s such a beautiful and powerful entrance. Although, you will find me in Ray or Brown Courtyards nearly every day.
Q: What’s the most exciting time of year for you as it relates to Rice?
A: Fall is definitely the most exciting time of the year on campus. The week before students return from summer, you start to feel the energy buzzing like something big is coming, and it is. It’s busy but rewarding.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?
A: Connecting with amazing community partners, both internationally and locally, that are having such a positive impact on students and their community. It keeps me hopeful and motivated.
Q: What are your most memorable accomplishments?
A: One of my most memorable accomplishments was recently enrolling in a master’s program for global and intercultural communication at University of Houston. I have always wanted to return to school, and I now have the ability, time and support to do so. I will graduate next fall and am excited to see what comes next with it.
Q: What advice would you give to new employees?
A: Take lots of walks. A great way to mentally reset or do some reflecting is to walk around and discover some hidden spots around campus to sit and think.
Q: Would you share a bit about your background and career journey?
A: My background is mostly working with youth development nonprofits and local government programming. I really valued my time in nonprofit work and still see it as a core part of me that impacts how I interact with others. Starting at the Center for Civic Leadership, I had the chance to start a new career trajectory in international education, which I hope to continue to pursue while also combining my passion and appreciation for local, grassroots advocacy.
Q: What’s your favorite lunch spot or snack?
A: I’ll never turn down Oui Bahn Mi.
Q: What’s your secret talent?
A: I can ride a motorcycle.
Q: What’s your favorite memory from your time with Rice?
A: One of my favorite memories while at Rice was going to the rockstar-themed Division of Student Life and Undergraduate Education end-of-year awards. It was great to see people be celebrated, enjoy food and connect with my team.
