Q: How long have you worked at Rice?

A: I started my first job at Rice in July 2003.

Q: What is your favorite part about working for the university?

A: The sense of community, both within my department and around Rice, and being on such a beautiful campus.

Q: What do you want people to know about living in Houston?

A: I appreciate Houston’s diversity, various opportunities to experience a full range of cultural and athletic events and cuisine choices that can satisfy any palate. Of course, you still must navigate Houston traffic and unpredictable weather.

Q: What’s your favorite spot on campus to show someone?

A: Obviously, the Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center. Honestly you can’t go wrong with a campus tour as there are so many fascinating buildings and historical landmarks.

Q: What’s the most exciting time of year for you as it relates to Rice?

A: I really enjoy the buzz on campus during the first week of fall classes. There are so many new faces on campus, and you can feel the energy throughout the Rec Center.

Q: What’s the one thing that makes Rice special to you?

A: Rice has been my home for much, much longer than I anticipated. Having the opportunity to become an RA at Sid Rich from 2004-2009 really accelerated my connection to campus and desire to stay.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?

A: The flexibility and chances for growth. Even though I have worked for the same department since first arriving on campus, I’ve been fortunate to serve in multiple capacities and have opportunities for continued professional and personal development.

Q: What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

A: When I’m not driving my two kids to and from their multiple activities, I enjoy watching a nightly TV show with my wife, traveling with the family or having a nice dinner with friends.

Q: What advice would you give to new employees?

A: Get to know people on campus and don’t be afraid to ask for advice or assistance. We’ve all been there, and so many people want to help you succeed.

Q: What’s your favorite lunch spot or snack?

A: On campus is currently Ambassador Cafe. Off campus would be Chicken Kitchen.

Q: What’s your secret talent?

A: I can sing, but luckily my daughter steals the show now.

Q: If you could be Sammy The Owl for a day, what would you do?

A: Casually walk around campus during a very busy day for campus tours. I think the randomness would be amusing.

Q: Where do you see Rice in 25 years?

A: I expect Rice to continue elevating its global reputation, balancing world-class research with a vibrant, student centered culture.

Q: What’s your favorite memory from your time with Rice?

A: The grand opening of the Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center.

Q: Describe Rice in four words or less.

A: Community, collaborative, creative and cutting-edge.
