Population decline has quietly emerged as one of the defining demographic shifts of the 21st century, and many countries are now confronting shrinking populations and the economic, social and infrastructure challenges that accompany the shifts.
The Baker Institute for Public Policy at Rice University will host a conference Sept. 9 to examine the causes and consequences of declining population trends. Expert panels will explore topics including demographic statistics, immigration, education, fiscal policy, technology, geopolitics and infrastructure.
Hosted by the Baker Institute’s Center for Tax and Budget Policy and fellows John Diamond and Bill King, the conference will feature a keynote address by Rob Kaplan, vice chairman of Goldman Sachs and former president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. David Satterfield, former U.S. ambassador and director of the Baker Institute, will join the geopolitics panel.
