Rice University’s campus is home to the Lynn R. Lowrey Arboretum, a living collection of woody plants and native species that bursts into color each spring as hundreds of azaleas come into bloom. To celebrate the seasonal display, the university’s Office of Public Affairs hosted Rice Blue in Bloom March 6 in the Milus E. Hindman Garden.

Known for their striking flowers in a wide range of shapes and colors, azaleas typically bloom on campus for approximately three weeks each spring, depending on the weather. Because the window is brief, the university waits each year for signs that the blossoms are reaching their peak before inviting the campus community to gather and enjoy the display.

Guests were encouraged to join the celebration by wearing Rice blue while enjoying light bites, coffee and smoothies from Grizzaffi Coffee Catering. Attendees also had the opportunity to pose for complimentary photos among the vibrant azaleas, capturing the fleeting beauty of one of Rice’s most colorful traditions.
