Through the Ignite: Faculty Advancement Matching Gift Fund, Rice University is gaining significant momentum in its effort to recruit and retain world-class faculty. Powered by the generosity of an anonymous alumni couple whose transformative $20 million commitment is inspiring others to invest in the university’s future, donors have committed $17 million in gifts, leaving $3 million in matching funds still available.

Launched 16 months ago, the Ignite Fund was designed to double donor contributions to create permanently endowed chairs, professorships and teaching positions. To date, the gifts have generated $34 million in total impact.

“This extraordinary momentum reflects both the strength of Rice’s vision and the confidence our supporters have in our future,” Rice President Reginald DesRoches said. “We are profoundly thankful for the vision and generosity of the alumni who created the Ignite Matching Gift Fund, as well as every donor who used this fund to establish faculty chairs and professorships.”

"At Rice, we know that progress happens when people collaborate across disciplines, industries and communities,” said Amy Dittmar, the Howard R. Hughes Provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “To make that kind of progress happen, we need dynamic, imaginative faculty working across disciplines, and the Ignite Fund is helping us bring those voices to campus and support their work.”

Thus far, the initiative has established 10 endowed positions across four schools, including one deanship, one chair, seven professorships and one teaching professorship.

“This investment is already making a meaningful difference in our ability to recruit and support leading faculty in engineering and computing,” said Luay Nakhleh, the William and Stephanie Sick Dean of the George R. Brown School of Engineering and Computing. “Endowed positions provide the flexibility and long-term stability that top scholars seek, and they enable us to build collaborative, forward-looking programs across our three research thrusts of health and well-being, sustainability and resilience, and computing and AI. The Ignite Fund is helping us compete at the highest level.”

The initiative directly supports Rice’s 10-year strategic plan, Momentous, which prioritizes growth in areas where the university can make a significant societal impact, including health innovation, sustainability, urban communities and the responsible development of artificial intelligence. While aligned with these priorities, the matching fund supports faculty across all disciplines.

“We are profoundly grateful to these visionary donors and to the many others who have stepped forward to participate in the match,” said Stephen Bayer, vice president for development and alumni relations. “Their generosity has created a powerful sense of momentum and shared purpose. With just $3 million remaining, we have a unique opportunity to fully leverage this gift and extend its impact for generations.”

The Ignite Fund strengthens Rice’s commitment to maintaining its 6-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio while enhancing opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students. New faculty bring expanded research opportunities, mentorship and interdisciplinary collaboration that enrich the academic experience.

The anonymous alumni couple behind the original gift said they are encouraged by the progress and hope others will help close the final gap.

“We believe deeply in Rice’s vision for the future and the role faculty play in shaping that future,” the donors said. “It’s inspiring to see the response this initiative has generated. We hope others will join in to help complete the match and amplify its impact.”

With $3 million remaining, university leaders are encouraging donors to act now to maximize the impact of their contributions before the matching funds are fully committed.
