Rice University’s football team will look to get back in the win column Saturday when the Owls travel to East Carolina for an American Conference matchup at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, North Carolina.
Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. with coverage on ESPN+. The game marks Rice’s first trip to East Carolina since 2009 and just the third meeting between the programs. The Pirates won the previous two meetings, including a 49-13 victory in 2009.
The Owls enter the game at 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play following a 16-14 loss to UTSA last Saturday. Despite the result, head coach Scott Abell sees Saturday’s matchup as an opportunity to measure the progress Rice has made.
“I think this is a great road test for us,” Abell said. “I’m looking forward to it, and I think the games we’ve played, our opponents up to now, really have prepared us for this.”
East Carolina is 2-2 overall after opening the season with losses to Alabama and Appalachian State before earning wins over Old Dominion and North Carolina Central. The Pirates have played well defensively, Abell said, while also showing signs of finding their identity on offense.
“They’re a program with high expectations,” Abell said. “They expect to compete and be a part of bowl games each and every year, compete for a conference championship, and those are what we’re pursuing.”
For Rice quarterback Jacurri Brown, the key is maintaining perspective and continuing to improve through the season’s ups and downs.
“The best thing to do is just take a deep breath and go, just next play,” Brown said.
Brown also pointed to the Owls’ belief in one another as they prepare for another challenging road game.
“Nobody’s quitting,” he said. “Nobody’s in that locker room being toxic. It’s everybody coming together for that goal.”
Following Saturday’s game, Rice will return home Oct. 17 to host Tulsa at First Community Stadium with a road game Oct. 24 at Florida Atlantic.
Single-game and group tickets for the Owls' remaining home games in 2026 are currently on sale through the Rice Athletics Ticket Office.
