Rice University’s football team returns to Rice Stadium Sept. 19 to take on Western Michigan University at 6 p.m. The game is part of H-Town Heroes Night, honoring Houston’s first responders and military personnel.
Rice head coach Scott Abell said the matchup against the defending Mid-American Conference champions will provide a valuable opportunity for the Owls.
“Landing really good programs like Western Michigan on our schedule is very important for us as we build our program,” Abell said.
The Broncos enter the matchup with a reputation for physical, disciplined play. Abell said their effort stood out on film — particularly in their recent matchup against the University of Michigan, where WMU nearly completed a major upset in the 13-12 loss.
“When I watch them play against Michigan, I see them playing with incredible effort,” Abell said. “When people start listing talents and traits, they start with size and speed, but playing with great effort is a skill.”
Rice is in its second season under Abell, and center Nate Bledsoe said the offense is progressing in the system.
“I think second year in, with guys that have been recruited specifically to run this kind of scheme, everyone’s much more comfortable, and I think we’re faster,” Bledsoe said.
The Owls will look to bring their physical style of play to Saturday’s matchup.
“Physicality is something that we try to hang our hat on defensively,” linebacker Cooper King said.
Fans can begin the day at Tailgate Owley, which opens at 3 p.m. with a beer garden, live music, Houston Police Department vehicles and other activities. Parking opens at 2 p.m., and stadium gates open at 4:30 p.m.
