Following a hard-fought home loss to Western Michigan, Rice University’s football team hits the road for a Sept. 26 matchup with Fresno State that renews a rivalry from the Owls’ days in the Western Athletic Conference.
Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. at Fresno State’s Valley Children’s Stadium. Rice and Fresno State were WAC opponents from 1996 through 2004, giving the Owls and Bulldogs a long history of competition before Rice eventually moved on from the conference. The last meeting between the teams came in the 2014 Hawai’i Bowl where Rice took home a 30-6 victory.
Rice enters Saturday’s game looking to bounce back from a 28-21 loss to Western Michigan at Rice Stadium. The Owls rallied from a 14-7 halftime deficit to tie the game early in the second half, and a late touchdown cut the Broncos’ lead to seven with less than two minutes remaining.
Quarterback Jacurri Brown led the way for Rice, rushing for 128 yards and throwing for 121 more. His late 22-yard touchdown pass to Barry Jackson Jr. gave the Owls one final opportunity, but Western Michigan recovered the ensuing onside kick to secure the win.
Following the Fresno State trip, the Owls will return home to host the University of Texas at San Antonio at 6 p.m. Oct. 3 during Families Weekend.
