Rice University’s Fondren Library marked Constitution Day Sept. 17 with an afternoon of activities highlighting the U.S. Constitution, citizenship and civic engagement.
The event, held in collaboration with Rice’s Department of Political Science, Program in Politics, Law and Social Thought, League of Women Voters, Rice Phi Beta Kappa and student organizations, featured a panel discussion, voter registration assistance, educational demonstrations, exhibit tours and interactive activities.
The featured panel, “America 250: The Constitution from Quills to AI,” explored the Constitution’s history and continued relevance in an era of rapidly changing technology. The 45-minute discussion was followed by a Q & A session.
Throughout the afternoon, certified voter registrars helped attendees register to vote and provided election information, while Harris County staff led voting machine demonstrations and ballot-practice sessions for first-time voters. International students also were invited to participate in the educational activities.
“The success of Constitution Day reflects the power of collaboration,” said Anna Xiong, head of the Kelley Center for Government Information and Civic Engagement. “I am grateful to our Rice and community partners for bringing their expertise, energy and perspectives to the program. Working together allows us to reach a broader audience and create richer opportunities for civic learning and engagement.
“I hope Constitution Day is not just a one-day observance but a starting point for continued reflection, learning and civic engagement.”

Attendees also toured America250 exhibits at Fondren’s Woodson Research Center and Kelley Center, tested their knowledge of the Constitution through games and quizzes and created their own buttons, bookmarks and coloring projects. Free pocket-sized U.S. Constitutions, cake and snacks were also available.
The event was organized as part of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, observed annually Sept. 17 to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787 and recognize the rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship.
Through America250@Fondren, Fondren Library is creating opportunities throughout the year for the Rice and Houston communities to explore our history, consider the meaning of citizenship and civic responsibility, engage with the present and envision the future.
