Rice University’s Office of Student Success Initiatives hosted a prematriculation program for incoming freshman and their families Aug. 13-14 as a leadup to O-Week. Named Owl Access, the initiative is led and supported by current students to welcome freshmen who move in early to Rice, providing a comfortable adjustment period and easing them into college life.
“Owl Access is a program supporting first-generation, limited-income students, and we’re here to support them before they jump into O-Week and matriculation,” Chao College junior Alivia-Rae Green said. “Students and families both are receiving many resources and sessions to really understand how they can succeed and excel.”
Owl Access provides support, resources and friendly connections as new students settle into their residential college and navigate university life. Focused on building confidence and a sense of belonging, this program helps students gain practical skills that empower them to enjoy their academic journey fully and turn challenges into exciting opportunities for success.
With programming designed specifically for this student population and their families, the goal is to provide a personalized introduction to Rice and connection to the tools and offerings critical to their success. The two days included peer mentorship, workshops and panels, resource awareness and campus and Houston exploration.
“I was really scared coming into college. I had no idea what to expect, but I’m really happy that I have something that I can look back on and got the guidance I need,” incoming Duncan College freshman Zoe Betancis said.
