Rice University’s Fondren Library honored web developer and graphic designer Jeff Koffler with the 2026 Shapiro Staff Innovation Award during a ceremony Oct. 22 recognizing his decades of creative and technical contributions to the library and the Rice community.

The award, named for former vice provost and university librarian Beth Shapiro, recognizes library staff members who develop innovative services or demonstrate exemplary service to the university community.

Koffler has worked on Fondren’s website for approximately 20 years, helping guide its evolution through major redesigns, technology upgrades and content migrations. His work extends beyond the library’s digital presence to include graphic design, visual branding, digital signage and building improvement projects.

“Once you start looking, you realize just how much Jeff’s work is all around us,” said Denis Galvin, assistant university librarian for IT and technical services, who nominated Koffler for the award. “What makes Jeff particularly talented is that he brings together two different skill sets: the technical ability to build and maintain a website, and the creative ability to make it look good and work well.”

Koffler’s graphic design work appears throughout Fondren, from website graphics and event materials to logos, displays and promotional merchandise. He has also played an important role in the library’s website development, managing major upgrades and helping translate ideas from collaborative redesign projects into functional, user-friendly digital experiences.

A Rice graduate who studied architecture, Koffler has contributed to improvements to the library’s physical spaces as well, including study room renovations. Galvin said Koffler’s architectural background complements his design skills and has made him a valuable contributor to projects beyond his formal responsibilities.

Throughout his career, Koffler has drawn on a combination of technical expertise, creative problem-solving and a commitment to improving the library for students, faculty and staff.

“I like working with smart people,” Koffler said during the ceremony. “I like working with people that want change and want to improve the building and our services.”

Koffler also reflected on his long-standing connection to Rice, recalling his first experiences in Fondren Library as a student and the changes he has witnessed over the years.

“Thirty years ago, I never would have thought when I walked into Fondren Library that I would still be here,” he said.

Sara Lowman, vice provost and university librarian, praised Koffler’s work as an example of the innovation and dedication the award was established to honor.

“Jeff’s work reflects the kind of thoughtful, innovative, dedicated service that this award was created to recognize,” Lowman said. “His contributions help ensure that Fondren continues to serve the changing needs of the Rice community.”

The Shapiro Staff Innovation Award was established through an endowed fund created by the estate of Shapiro, who served as university librarian from 1991 to 1995. Shapiro was known for encouraging staff development, mentoring colleagues and supporting innovation in library services and technology.
