In the four-county greater Houston region, surveys show 14% of households are living below the federal poverty threshold while another 28% are working hard but still can’t afford basic life necessities. Together that makes 42% — nearly half of all Houstonians who are facing challenges that Owls can help address through the Rice United Way Campaign, which officially launched this week.

The campaign provides an opportunity to make a real difference in the area. Contributions not only support individuals and families in need, but they also help to build a stronger, more resilient Houston for everyone.

“For decades, United Way has made a meaningful difference for thousands of our neighbors across our four-county greater Houston region,” Rice President Reginald DesRoches said. “Paula and I are deeply grateful for the generosity of so many of our Rice colleagues, and we hope you will consider joining us this year as we once more go ‘Owl in for Houston.’”

Last year, Rice faculty and staff contributed more than $175,000 toward those efforts, bringing the university’s total giving to more than $3.65 million over the past 15 years.

The United Way of Greater Houston creates opportunities for people to prosper through financial stability services, coupled with early childhood and youth development programs as well as health care programs. These important resources help families not only gain financial stability but also build more sustainable futures for themselves and their children.

Rice faculty and staff have long been generous supporters of United Way, helping to improve the lives of thousands of Houstonians. This year, members of the university community are invited to join that legacy by contributing to the 2026-27 campaign, which runs through mid-January.

Rice supports the United Way of Greater Houston because of its proven ability to create substantial change. Through investments in education, family stability and the well-being of veterans, United Way helps to transform lives and create lasting community impact.

Employees can contribute by setting up a payroll deduction at unitedway.rice.edu. Donations can be made in the form of payroll contributions, cash, check or credit card. Every gift is impactful and deeply appreciated, no matter the size.

As an extra incentive, for a limited time any new campaign gift or increase above last year’s contribution amount will be matched dollar for dollar.

This year’s campaign co-chairs are Elaine Howard Ecklund, the Herbert S. Autrey Professor of Sociology and director of the Boniuk Institute for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance, and Joop Oranje, senior director of people and culture in the Office of Human Resources.
