More than 600 investors, entrepreneurs and industry leaders gathered at Rice Business Nov. 11 for the 14th annual Texas Life Science Forum, co-hosted by BioHouston and the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship. The event highlighted Houston’s growing leadership in life science innovation, commercialization and venture investment.

As Texas’ premier life science conference, the forum convened 48 emerging companies representing therapeutics, medical devices, diagnostics and digital health alongside global investors and corporate innovation leaders. Fifty companies participated in the event’s “Office Hours,” connecting directly with investors and strategic partners. Collectively, participating ventures have raised more than $650 million in funding and hailed from 10 states and four countries, underscoring the forum’s growing reach and impact across the life science ecosystem.

William McKeon, president and CEO of the Texas Medical Center (TMC), opened the event with a keynote describing the history and scale of the TMC, the largest of its kind globally.  The TMC sees more patients annually than the population of some countries.

“If you’re a top surgeon and you want to be top of your game, you need to go to a place that has the most complicated cases, the most volume of cases, and that’s in any discipline,” McKeon said. “So we’re always drawing people, and it’s one of the greatest strengths of Houston — diversity. And if you look at how many people, because this is always about people, we have 120,000 employees. One in four are foreign born. It’s our strength.”

The program featured in-depth discussions on biotech market trends, capital raising strategies and translating academic research into real-world patient impact as well as sessions focused on investment pathways, commercialization and building a sustainable life sciences ecosystem in Texas. Companies seeking investment for the advancement of therapeutics across indications ranging from CNS to cancer and medical technologies ranging from portable oxygen generators to hydrogels for brain surgery each presented a four-minute pitch to showcase their innovation and business plan.

At the close of the forum, awards were presented to the Most Promising Life Science Companies as voted on by investors, the BioHouston Michael E. DeBakey Memorial Life Science Award, and the People’s Choice Award, recognizing outstanding innovation and entrepreneurship in the life sciences.
