Hundreds of Owls gathered in Grand Hall at Rice University’s Memorial Center to celebrate Soul Night, an event organized by the university’s Black Student Association (BSA) that showcased an original jukebox musical to celebrate the Black Rice experience and Black-American musical excellence. Junior Sam Peltrau and sophomore Chelsea Asibbey directed and produced the performance.
“It’s a beautiful time to display Black students’ abilities and talents and creativities on this campus,” said Jerron-Michael Arline, a Jones College senior and vice president of the BSA. “We are a minority on this campus, but our impact on culture is just as important, and our impact at Rice is just as important. [Soul Night] is a beautiful time that allows us to be able to share things that we hold dear to our culture with the rest of Rice.”
Rice BSA is dedicated to supporting Black students and engaging the community through outreach, social and cultural events.
“The Black Student Association works to create a space for students to feel empowered and also get involved in the community,” Arline said.
