Q: How long have you worked at Rice?
A: One year.
Q: What is your favorite part about working for the university?
A: Knowing I am part of this great university at this moment and knowing that our work is supporting the university’s mission.
Q: What do you want people to know about living in Houston?
A: Houston is a very big and diverse city. Yes, it can be warm in the summer, but overall, Houston provides many great opportunities throughout the year for every age and phase of life.
Q: What do you do in your downtime?
A: I’m not sure what classifies as “downtime,” but time outside of work is “family time” for me.
Q: What’s your favorite spot on campus to show someone?
A: My favorite spot is the Sallyport with its four faces above the corner pillars. Besides showing the details, I like to share the symbolism of entering Rice during matriculation and leaving after graduation.
Q: What’s the one thing that makes Rice special to you?
A: It’s a unique small community in one of the biggest cities in the country.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?
A: I enjoy working with colleagues across different departments on a variety of issues and projects.
Q: What are your most memorable accomplishments?
A: Many years ago, I walked under the Sallyport wearing a cap and gown and a Rice diploma in my hand.
Q: What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
A: I like to tinker with electronics and play games with my children. I recently replaced the parts of a broken PC, and I got it to work again after a few attempts.
Q: What advice would you give to new employees?
A: I would suggest spending a little time walking around the university and understanding how your role impacts the campus.
Q: Would you share a bit about your background and career journey?
A: I graduated from Rice with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. I worked in engineering for a few years before returning to school full time to pursue an MBA. Afterwards, I worked for an airline and then oil and gas companies. Most of my work experience has been within supply chain management. When I saw an opportunity at Rice that aligned with my experience, it was a clear sign to come back.
Q: What’s your favorite lunch spot or snack?
A: I like visiting the Cohen House. Prior to working here, I visited once as a student and on a few special occasions as an alumnus. Now, I get to visit more often.
Q: What’s your secret talent?
A: It wouldn’t be a secret if I shared it here.
Q: What’s one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?
A: Carpe diem, travel more and learn more about finance and investing. That is more than one, but all are important.
Q: If you could be Sammy The Owl for a day, what would you do?
A: In the morning, set up a table in the quad, give away donuts and wish the students and staff a great day. Then for lunch, I’ll do it again but with tacos and pizza. During dinner time, I’d go around the campus with desserts: cookies, cakes, pies and ice cream. By the way, it’s not all about the food but rather about spreading joy!
Q: How would you describe your experience as a Rice employee?
A: My experience has been great so far, and I’m looking forward to the years ahead.
Q: Where do you see Rice in 25 years?
A: While the university has seen much physical transformation over the past 25 years, its community and spirit have remained constant. I expect that enduring character to continue well into the future with a stronger presence and recognition globally.
Q: Describe Rice in four words or less.
A: Smart, unique, diverse, welcoming.
Q: Anything else?
A: Momentous. As an employee, it’s an exciting time to be here as this strategic plan is rolled out.
