A delegation of law enforcement officers from South Korea recently visited campus to learn how the Rice University Police Department (RUPD) addresses domestic violence cases.

The visit was arranged through Adria Baker, former head of Rice’s Office of International Students and Scholars, and included presentations from RUPD staff as well as a tour of the department.

RUPD Chief Clemente Rodriguez said the visit highlights Rice’s global mission and the shared responsibility of public safety across borders.

“Rice University puts a huge emphasis on having a global impact, not just here in the U.S. and in Texas, and this visit aligns perfectly with that mission,” Rodriguez said. “This was an opportunity for us to be a part of that global impact by meeting with counterparts from South Korea, learning about what they do and sharing what we do.”

Rodriguez added that law enforcement bonds extend far beyond national lines.

“For us in law enforcement, it is truly a family that even goes beyond just in the United States. … We all really share a common bond and our goal for public safety,” he said.
