As Rice University prepares to celebrate the Class of 2025 at commencement May 9-10, Rice News is spotlighting a collection of standout seniors.
Sophianne Loh, a bioengineering major from Chicago, found her home at Rice in the strong sense of community and top-tier research opportunities. Drawn early to hands-on innovation, Loh joined the lab of neuroengineer Jacob Robinson as a freshman, where she helped design and fabricate wearable ECG biosensors — devices that monitor heart activity — for infants in neonatal intensive care. Her work ranged from nanoparticle synthesis to fabricating neural interfaces, aligning closely with her goal of developing medical devices to address critical health care needs. Beyond the lab, Loh has been an active leader in the Society of Women Engineers, mentoring fellow students and supporting their professional development. For Loh, Rice was a place where her curiosity, technical skills and drive to help others came together in powerful ways.
