Rice Update: Continuing support for our international students

Sunrise on the Rice University campus

The following message was sent to members of the Rice community May 23.

Dear students, faculty and staff,

As we head into the Memorial Day weekend, Rice and its Office of International Students and Scholars are closely monitoring the action taken by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Thursday to terminate Harvard University’s Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) certification, which could end Harvard’s permission to host international students. As of Friday morning, a federal judge has temporarily halted the administration’s move.

Rice, like its peers, remains open to students, faculty and scholars from all over the world and is very concerned by this unprecedented action. We also remain steadfast in our support of Rice’s many international students and the fundamental importance of global education and exchange to our mission — and the pursuit of knowledge and human understanding. OISS has communicated directly with international students and scholars and is available to assist at all times at https://oiss.rice.edu .

We will continue to update the Rice community on this matter as needed.
