Rice University has been selected to join the 2025 cohort of the FirstGen Forward Network, a national initiative that recognizes colleges committed to advancing the success of first-generation college students.

Led by NASPA and the Suder Foundation, the FirstGen Forward Network connects more than 450 institutions to share strategies, research and resources aimed at improving outcomes for first-gen students.

“At Rice, we want every student to have the tool kit they need to thrive and achieve their goals,” said Bridget Gorman, dean of undergraduates at Rice. “Joining the FirstGen Forward Network will provide another layer of support in this effort, and I am excited to see how this expanded network of expertise will benefit our students in the time ahead.”

“This is a campuswide commitment, not just a one-time effort,” said Shelah Crear, associate dean of undergraduates. “We’re investing in everything from advising to financial aid to ensure first-gen students thrive at Rice.”

The announcement comes as Rice continues to expand access through initiatives like The Rice Investment and partnerships with QuestBridge, resulting in significant growth in its first-gen, limited-income student population.

“We need to be good stewards of that commitment — not just to get students here but to see them through to graduation and beyond,” said Araceli Lopez, executive director of Student Success Initiatives.

As a FirstGen Forward member, Rice will collaborate with peer institutions across the country, gain early access to research and professional development and receive tailored support to enhance student outcomes. Two initial goals include:

  • Increasing the four-year graduation rate for first-gen, limited-income students

  • Launching a new survey to measure and improve students’ sense of belonging

Rice’s selection followed a competitive application process involving multiple campus partners, including Student Success Initiatives, Admissions, Financial Aid, Institutional Effectiveness and the Office of the Registrar.

“This is about ensuring all students — regardless of background — have access to the full Rice experience,” Crear said.
