As businesses and organizations traverse the age of artificial intelligence, the importance of ethical and effective leadership is as prominent as ever. AI is unlocking unprecedented opportunities for businesses and organizations worldwide, but it also brings pressing ethical questions about the extent to which leaders should rely on these tools and how to responsibly integrate AI into employees’ workflows.
Experts at Rice University’s Doerr Institute for New Leaders are leading the discussion on the prominence of quantifying leader development across platforms to ensure effective leaders are being produced at scale to proficiently deal with these issues.

Bernie Banks
Director of the Doerr Institute
A world-class leader and noted expert on the subjects of leadership and organizational change and culture, Banks can speak to the importance of strong leadership, what constitutes effective leader development and the role leadership plays as it relates to organizational culture in the age of AI.
“The rapidly evolving nature of today’s technology presents leaders with a myriad of challenges and opportunities,” Banks said. “Leveraging AI can aid leaders significantly in shifting through large quantities of data and drawing inferences, crafting drafts for communications and truncating the time required to knock out noncomplex tasks. However, leaders must always think critically about how people might be impacted by anything they elect to do that involves the utilization of an AI-generated product.”
Formerly the associate dean for leadership development at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, Banks is also a retired U.S. Army brigadier general and led military units ranging in size from 10 to over 3,000 people. He is the co-author of “The New Science of Momentum: How the Best Coaches and Leaders Build Fire from a Single Spark,” a transformative new book that draws on his extensive experience in the military, academia and executive coaching. A sought-after public speaker, Banks is a renowned coach and teacher on executive leadership.

Ryan Brown
Managing director for measurement at the Doerr Institute
Brown is a thought leader on human behavior and leader development. His work explores the value of quantifying leader development through tangible data around meaningful developmental outcomes. He can speak to the process of measuring success as it relates to leader development, why these measurements are important and what qualities make for a good leader in various settings and organizations.
“In the age of AI, strong leaders are more important than ever,” Brown said. “Although AI opens new possibilities daily, we need effective and ethical leaders to help guide us through the process of deciding not just what we can do with AI but what we should.”
Brown regularly consults with organizations on ways to measure their impact on people and achieve transformational goals across industries including publishing, banking, government, the nonprofit sector and education. He has published more than 70 scientific articles on human thought and behavior over the last 25 years and is the author/co-author of three books.
