June serves as LGBTQ+ Pride Month, and to celebrate, Rice University and many campus affiliates will host events to spread awareness about the LGBTQ+ community and educate on sexual and gender diversity.
June 21, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. — Rice Pride Tie-Dye Pizza Party, Baker College
Wear comfortable clothes and join the Rice community outdoors in the Baker/Will Rice Quad to help tie-dye the rainbow Rice Pride shirts for this year’s parade participants. As with the parade, all Rice students, alumni, employees, family and friends are welcome. Cold drinks and pizza provided. Whether you can join us for the parade or not, all tie-dye volunteers receive a free Rice Pride shirt. To volunteer, please email ruevents@rice.edu.
June 26, 5-7 p.m. — Pride Happy Hour, Moody Center for the Arts
The evening will include a cappella renditions of pop favorites by Pride Chorus Houston and tunes from DJ Krazzy Kris. In addition to enjoying pride anthems old and new, the Moody is offering complimentary drinks, after-hours access to the galleries and the opportunity to make kitschy crafts.
June 27, 7-10 p.m. — Rainbow on the Green, Discovery Green
Rock out with Pride Chorus Houston at “True Colors,” a concert that will transport listeners back to the bodacious, neon-colored glory of the 1980s and blend iconic tunes with the vibrant energy of Pride Month. Throw on some acid-washed jeans, pump up the Reeboks and prepare for a legendary night of nostalgic music. Rice Employee Pride will host a gathering of interested music lovers, and the event is the perfect opportunity to show off the rainbow-colored tie-dye shirts.
June 28 — Houston Pride Parade
Rice will sponsor a walking group in the 47th annual parade. The parade route will start downtown near City Hall, 901 Bagby St. All Rice students, alumni, employees, families and friends are invited to participate in the walking group sponsored by Rice Alumni Pride, Rice Employee Pride, the Office of Access and Institutional Excellence and the Office of Public Affairs. Registration is free, but space is limited.
In addition to Rice PRIDE, Rice offers additional resources to the LGBTQ+ community, including the Center for the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality, oSTEM, Rice Business Out & Allied, Rice Alumni Pride, the Queer Resource Center, the Rice Queer Graduate Student Association and an employee resource group for LGBTQ+ faculty and staff.
