Rice University is recognizing Michael Morgan for more than 29 years of service. As the director of parking operations, he oversees the administrative operations, facilities, registration, events and technical support within the parking department. His last day with the university will be Dec. 31.
Q: What is your favorite time of year at Rice and why?
A: My favorite time of year is commencement. Seeing students walk across the stage after years of hard work is incredibly rewarding. It reminds me why we do what we do — supporting their journey and celebrating their achievements. The energy and joy on campus during that time are unmatched.
Q: Share your most memorable, standout moments during your time at the university.
A: The top moment has to be in 2003, when I was director of facilities and operations for Rice Athletics and the Owls won the NCAA DI national championship in baseball. Being part of the team that supported that historic season was incredibly rewarding. Another standout experience was in 2012, while working in Parking, when I orchestrated the parking plans for Rice’s centennial celebrations — a historic undertaking that showcased the university to alumni and guests from around the world. Beyond those highlights, it has been wonderful to contribute to so many projects over my 29-plus years, from opening Reckling Park to adding a soccer field for Rice’s new women’s team to assisting with the BRC and the Entrance 3 Garage builds. Perhaps most meaningful of all are the memories I’ve made working alongside my wonderful Rice colleagues — especially in Parking, where I have spent the most time, 21 years. The camaraderie, teamwork and shared dedication have been the heart of my Rice experience.
Q: How have you seen Rice evolve over the years?
A: Rice has grown in both its physical footprint and its national reputation. The campus has added new facilities, academic buildings and athletic venues, while also expanding its research and global partnerships. I’ve seen the university become more diverse and innovative, while still holding onto the close-knit community spirit that makes Rice unique.
Q: How have you evolved because of your experience at the university?
A: My time at Rice taught me resilience, adaptability and the importance of teamwork. Managing facilities and operations required problem-solving under pressure, and I grew as a leader by learning to balance tradition with progress. The relationships I built here shaped me both professionally and personally, and I carry those lessons with me every day.
Q: What advice would you give to employees to make the most of their time at the university?
A: Embrace the community and take joy in the role you play, no matter how big or small. Build connections across campus, stay open to learning and remember that your work contributes to the success of students and the university as a whole. Celebrate the wins — whether they’re on the field, in the classroom or within your department — and enjoy the journey.
