Rice Athletics hosted its annual Night of Flight celebration and fundraiser May 1, bringing together alumni, student-athletes, supporters, family and friends to reflect on a year of achievement and momentum.

This year’s event, themed Denim & Diamonds, honored standout individuals and moments that have shined the brightest at Rice.

“Our alumni and supporters are the heartbeat of Rice Athletics,” said Tommy McClelland, vice president and director of athletics. “Your belief in our mission, your willingness to give, to show up and cheer until you’re hoarse makes all the difference. Because of you, our student-athletes don’t just compete — they thrive. They excel in the classroom, lead in the community and represent Rice with integrity and pride.

“Your giving is not just a number — it’s a statement. It says, ‘We believe in Rice. We believe in our students. We believe in the future we’re building together.’”

The event included recognition of athletic achievements from the past year and honors for former Rice athletes and coaches. Dinner was provided by J-Bar-M Barbecue, and a live auction gave guests the opportunity to bid on exclusive items and experiences.

Three current student-athletes took the stage to share personal reflections from their experiences at Rice. Among them was Rice football player Josh Williams, who spoke about his journey from a small town in Alabama to one of the top universities in the country.

“For someone like me to grow up where I did and to end up at not just a college but one of the best universities in the nation — it’s been a game-changer for me and my family,” Williams said. “That’s something I credit to those who’ve invested in me, in Rice Athletics and in this university. Because of their support, in just over a week I’ll be graduating with an engineering degree from Rice University.”

Williams emphasized the importance of continuing the cycle of support.

“Once I graduate, I look forward to giving back — whether that’s financially or as a mentor to current and future student-athletes,” he said. “If Rice has impacted any of you the way it’s impacted me, I believe it’s our responsibility to keep that culture of care going. That’s how we help the next generation succeed, both on and off the field.”
