Amid global tensions, a new book from Rice University’s Craig Considine endeavors to build and strengthen relations between Christians and Muslims.
“Beyond Dialogue: Building Bonds Between Christians and Muslims,” set to be released in the U.S. Jan. 29, offers a new perspective on fostering harmony between the two faiths. Considine introduces the concept of the synthesis of civilizations, highlighting the deep historical and cultural ties between Western and Islamic societies.
“My latest book is a call to action for people of goodwill, urging us to move beyond mere dialogue and tolerance and embrace a deeper understanding and more authentic appreciation of our faiths and traditions,” said Considine, a senior lecturer in sociology at Rice. “Cultivating a spirit of harmony and unity is not merely a moral imperative but a practical necessity.”
The book explores Christian-Muslim relations across seven regions marked by conflict and misunderstanding, presenting both challenges and opportunities for bridge building. Through a blend of historical analysis and contemporary insights, Considine underscores the mutual values shared by these Abrahamic traditions, emphasizing themes of compassion, justice and community.
Considine introduces the DEUCE framework — dialogue, education, understanding, commitment and engagement — intended to guide interfaith initiatives. This practical tool equips readers with strategies for nurturing unity in divided communities, particularly in regions plagued by fear and violence.
Considine’s approach balances scholarly rigor and accessibility, making complex sociological and theological concepts relatable to a broad audience. The book’s release is intended to spark discussions among faith leaders, educators and activists, many of whom view it as a critical resource for advancing pluralism and civility.
“In a world increasingly defined by division, the bonds between Christianity and Islam are not just historical artifacts but living bridges to a shared future,” he said.
Considine said he hopes his work inspires a new wave of interfaith collaboration on the global stage. More information on the book is online at: https://www.politybooks.com/bookdetail?book_slug=beyond-dialogue-building-bonds-between-christians-and-muslims--9781509555260.
