Rice University has released two new editions of its flagship publications — Rice Magazine and R3: Rice Research Review — offering readers a look at the university’s rapidly growing global presence and research efforts aligned with major societal challenges and opportunities.
The fall issue of Rice Magazine, titled “The Global Issue,” highlights how the university is building international partnerships, expanding global learning opportunities for students and collaborating on research that spans continents.
“‘The Global Issue’ captures the extraordinary ways Rice is connecting internationally — in the lab, in the classroom and in the field,” said Lynn Gosnell, editor of Rice Magazine. “From our innovative center in Paris to our decadeslong partnerships with CERN as well as the many ways students are finding international educational opportunities, these stories show how Rice is building knowledge networks that matter.”
At the heart of the issue is a look at Rice Global India, a dynamic new partnership that is creating a research and academic ecosystem with a physical home in Bengaluru, India. Readers are also invited inside the Rice Global Paris Center, where faculty and students are forging new collaborations.
Meanwhile, stories from Madagascar to the Dominican Republic reveal how Rice students are engaging in hands-on, cross-cultural learning in ways that are as academically rigorous as they are personally meaningful. Additional coverage includes Rice’s participation in global tech conferences such as SXSW London and VivaTech Paris. Stories about alumni also amplify the global theme.
Also featured is the university’s continued involvement with CERN (European Council for Nuclear Research) in which university physicists are contributing to high-energy research both on campus and abroad.
While Rice Magazine offers a view of the university’s international footprint, the new issue of R3: Rice Research Review focuses on research aligned with the university’s strategic plan, Momentous. The magazine covers four key areas: innovations in health, thriving urban communities, sustainable futures and responsible artificial intelligence (AI).
“R3 gives readers an inside look at the bold, often surprising work happening in our labs, startups and classrooms,” said Katharine Shilcutt, editor of R3. “This issue demonstrates how Rice is not only advancing knowledge but also transforming it into impact.”
Stories in R3 spotlight the Institute of Health Resilience and Innovation as well as the work of chemist James Tour, whose lab is developing cancer-fighting nanotechnologies. Other articles feature student-designed medical devices that support people with Parkinson’s disease and improve urological care.
In the urban research section, R3 marks the 15th anniversary of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research and highlights work on mental health, neuroscience and economic inequality. The sustainability section focuses on projects such as living shorelines, recyclable carbon nanotubes and industrial decarbonization.
The issue also highlights Rice’s leadership in responsible AI, including the work of Lydia Kavraki, the Ken and Audrey Kennedy University Professor of Computer Scienceand member of all four of the nation’s most prestigious academies. Additional stories explore how the Digital Health Institute and the Synthesis X Center are transforming medicine through AI-driven innovation.
Both Rice Magazine and R3 are now available online and in print. Together, the publications reflect the university’s commitment to impactful scholarship, global engagement and research that addresses critical challenges.
