Hundreds of university employees gathered at the Rice Memorial Center’s Grand Hall April 3 for RiceFest, the annual event designed to help staff explore health care and other benefits. More than 30 campus departments and business partners welcomed attendees, offering valuable information about services and products available in anticipation of open enrollment, which runs through April 18.
"RiceFest served as the perfect launch for the open enrollment period — a celebration of Rice's culture of care and a reminder to invest in ourselves," said Verónica Villaseñor, manager for total rewards and the human resource service center. "Open enrollment is your opportunity to review benefits and make adjustments that align with your needs for the year ahead. By being proactive, you ensure both you and your family have the coverage and support you need to thrive. Don’t miss the chance to plan for the future — explore your options today in iO and the KnOWLedge Cafe. Make informed decisions now, and your future self will thank you."
At the event, employees enjoyed complimentary massages, snacks, promotional gifts and door prizes, all while gaining a deeper understanding of their benefits options. Human Resources staff were also on hand to assist with any questions about coverage and the open enrollment process.

Now that open enrollment has started, there are a few important points of information that employees might want to consider:
- For fiscal year 2026, all faculty and staff will see a reduction in medical and dental rates as a result of the Total Rewards Initiative.
- Changes made during open enrollment will be effective July 1.
- Open enrollment is a good opportunity for employees to review current benefits and life insurance beneficiaries. Required action is only needed for those who want to reelect the Health Savings Account (HSA) or a Flexible Spending Account (FSA).
- The HSA and FSA do not roll over. Employees will need to elect a new annual amount for the HSA and FSA each year.
- Faculty and staff who change medical plans will receive a new identification card by late June 2025.
