Yeeva Tsewang and Simran Singh may have different academic interests, but their journeys at Rice University share a common thread — both have been shaped by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) scholarship.

The award has not only provided financial support to Tsewang and Singh but also reinforced their appreciation for perseverance, community and personal growth.

For Tsewang, the rodeo scholarship has been a lesson in goal-setting and determination. “It’s taught me that setting a goal and taking small, actionable steps toward it is the key to success,” he said.

A computer science major considering a minor in data science and statistics, the freshman said he is captivated by the role of data in modern industries.

“Virtually every industry relies on data collection and analysis to measure progress and find areas for improvement,” he said. Though still exploring his career path, he says data science will be at its core.

Singh, on the other hand, is driven by her passion for law, government and public policy. A political science major with a minor in politics, law and social thought, the freshman plans to attend law school after graduation. She said receiving the HLSR scholarship not only relieved the financial burden of a college degree but has allowed her to focus more deeply on her studies and extracurricular activities at Rice.

“This scholarship has connected me with a community of scholars and professionals, fostering my growth both academically and personally,” Singh said.

To be eligible for an HLSR scholarship, applicants must be a U.S. citizen and Texas resident, be a graduating high school senior from an eligible school, complete a FAFSA form, plan to attend an accredited, not-for-profit university in Texas and meet the minimum score requirement for either the SAT or ACT.

When asked about their favorite rodeo events, Tsewang said his love of drawing and going to art museums makes the rodeo’s School Art Program competition his clear favorite. Singh, meanwhile, loves the intensity and coordination of barrel racing and the teamwork between the rider and the horse. As far as musical acts are concerned, Tsewang is excited about AJR’s performance, and Singh said she looks forward to seeing Lauren Daigle, Luke Bryan and Post Malone.

As they navigate their college years, both Tsewang and Singh said they are grateful for the Rodeo Houston support that has made their journeys possible.
