Fondren Library honored 45 Rice University authors, editors, composers and artists of works published in 2024 during its annual community celebration Jan. 29.
The event recognizes Rice faculty, staff, alumni and members of the Friends of Fondren Library who have authored a book, edited a journal, composed a major musical work or mounted a one-person art show in 2024.
“The Fondren Library and the Friends of Fondren are very pleased to offer programs like this event to recognize and honor and celebrate all the scholars that have published, composed or organized an exhibition,” said Sara Lowman, vice provost and university librarian. “The library is a place that brings people together to discuss important topics and themes, and we are grateful for the faculty who participated in a very interesting panel discussion.”
Three of the honored authors participated in the panel discussion, including Krista Comer, professor of English; Ilana Gershon, professor of anthropology; and Julie Fette, associate professor of French studies. Moderated by Peter C. Caldwell, the Samuel G. McCann Professor of History, the discussion touched on the structures of everyday life as it pertains to children’s literature, feminist conversations and the workplace.
This celebratory event comes during the Friends of Fondren’s 75th anniversary.
“As Friends of Fondren Library celebrates 75 years of support for Fondren Library, we are thankful for the faculty members who generously support our events with their time and scholarship and members and donors who attend and add to the conversation,” said Mary Lowery, executive director of Friends of Fondren. “We are delighted to offer free programming that shares faculty research and writing with the Rice community.”
The Friends of Fondren Library was founded in 1950 by a group of Rice alumni and friends. The organization has steadily contributed to the growth and quality of library resources and facilities for the benefit of Rice students, faculty, staff and the community. To learn more, click here.
