Hosted by Doerr marketing and communications specialist Kelley Prust, the “Leading Owls” podcast showcases Rice student, faculty and staff leaders along with leader development professionals and coaches, who share inspiring stories and practical tips on how to maximize one’s leadership potential.

“The power of stories can foster connection and inspiration,” said Bernie Banks, director of the Doerr Institute. “There are so many wonderful stories between Rice hedges that need to be shared with the world.”

One of the recent episodes, “From Student-Athlete to Transformational Leader: Tim Harrison and EPOG Academy,” features the leadership journey of Tim Harrison. A Rice alumnus and founder of the Enjoyable Pain of Growth (EPOG) Academy, Harrison arrived at Rice with dreams of a professional basketball career. When those aspirations didn’t materialize, he faced a turning point that set him on a path of personal growth and purpose.

Through his studies in psychology and involvement with the Doerr Institute, Harrison discovered his passion for helping others realize their potential.

“The ‘Leading Owls’ podcast is all about showcasing the incredible student leaders at Rice who are shaping our campus and beyond,” Prust said. “By sharing their journeys — the challenges, the wins and the lessons learned — we’re making leadership more attainable and accessible for every student, especially those who might not see themselves as leaders yet.

“Whether you’re new to campus or a first-generation student finding your way, these stories show that leadership isn’t about a title — it’s about taking action, making an impact and lifting others along the way.”

In the next episode, the podcast will feature an insightful conversation with senior Lynn-Chi Nguyen as she takes listeners behind the scenes of college government, shares the challenges and successes of being Baker College president and gives tips for students looking to get involved.

Those interested in listening can subscribe to the “Leading Owls” podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon, iHeart or Buzzsprout for a weekly dose of motivation and leadership insights. New episodes drop every Tuesday.
