NEWS RELEASES

Rice-BCM research enables detection of hazardous chemicals in human placenta with unprecedented speed and precision
Rice scientists and collaborators at Baylor College of Medicine have demonstrated a new method for detecting the presence of dangerous chemicals from tobacco smoke in human placenta with unprecedented speed and precision. The research team used a combination of light-based imaging techniques and machine learning algorithms to identify and label polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives ⎯ toxic compounds generated through the incomplete combustion of organic materials. Exposure to these chemicals during pregnancy can result in negative health outcomes such as preterm birth, low birth weight and developmental problems.
