Rice Univeristy’s Moody Center for the Arts will open its spring season with “score for transitional times,” a captivating dance performance and installation by choreographer Hope Mohr and visual artist Ranu Mukherjee, from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 10. This one-night-only event will set the stage for the Moody’s upcoming exhibition “Breath(e): Toward Climate and Social Justice,” exploring artistic responses to the climate crisis.

Featuring a diverse ensemble of international dancers, “score for transitional times” combines live choreography, muslin collages, moveable screens and video projections to create a multisensory experience. Inspired by visual scores designed by Mohr and Mukherjee, the performance will unfold in cycles of assembly and disintegration, mirroring the ebb and flow of energy transitions.

“Through this piece, we invite audiences to consider how somatic practice can inspire new perspectives on sustainability,” said Alison Weaver, the Suzanne Deal Booth Executive Director of the Moody Center. “‘score for transitional times’ engages deeply with both the visible and invisible forces shaping our lives and our planet.”

The performance will take place in the Moody’s Central Gallery, where suspended muslin collages and video projections will intertwine with the dancers’ movements to examine humanity’s connections to resources, time and energy. Questions of infrastructure, personal vitality and cultural rhythms will take center stage, creating a thought-provoking tableau that sparks dialogue about sustainable futures.

“This performance exemplifies the Moody’s commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration,” Weaver said. “The work of Hope Mohr and Ranu Mukherjee is a remarkable fusion of visual and performing arts, resonating with the challenges and possibilities of our era.”
