Q: How long have you worked at Rice?

A: For just over one year.

Q: What is your favorite part about working for the university?

A: The strong sense of community. I genuinely enjoy being in an environment where I look forward to going to work rather than feeling it’s an obligation. Collaborating
with colleagues from diverse backgrounds enriches my experience and allows me to grow both professionally and personally, making my time at Rice truly fulfilling.

Q: What do you want people to know about living in Houston?

A: I moved to Houston from a small town in the middle of Texas, and I’ve been amazed by the city’s diversity and welcoming nature. It feels like a vibrant jungle where you can meet people from all over the world. There’s never a shortage of things to do, especially when it comes to exploring the incredible variety of cuisines available throughout the city.

Q: What do you do in your downtime?

A: I love trying new things, and during my downtime, I strive to experience something different every week, whether it’s discovering a new restaurant or attending the latest exhibition in the museum district. I enjoy expanding my horizons by immersing myself in various activities. Additionally, I have a passion for playing video games.

Q: What’s your favorite spot on campus to show someone?

A: The Skyspace. It’s such a unique feature of the campus, and the surrounding areas are beautiful as well.

Q: What’s the most exciting time of year for you as it relates to Rice?

A: The fall. The campus becomes incredibly beautiful during this season, which makes my morning commute enjoyable and peaceful.

Q: What’s the one thing that makes Rice special to you?

A: The community. The people here are truly amazing, and I find that I learn something new every day.

Q: If you could be Sammy The Owl for a day, what would you do?

A: I would surprise students around campus with small gifts. I want to spread joy during their studies because college can be a difficult and stressful experience. Having the opportunity to brighten students’ days would be amazing!

Q: How would you describe your experience as a Rice employee?

A: My experience as a Rice employee has been nothing short of fulfilling. The vibrant community here creates an environment where I genuinely look forward to coming to work. I value the diversity of my colleagues, which enriches my professional and personal growth. Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new, and I am constantly inspired by the incredible people I encounter. I also cherish the beauty of the campus, especially during the fall, and I find joy in exploring new experiences and connecting with others. Overall, my time at Rice has been truly enriching and rewarding.

Q: Where do you see Rice in 25 years?

A: Although Rice is already recognized as an elite institution, I see it expanding in size and attracting a more diverse array of individuals from all over the world. The university’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation coupled with its vibrant community makes it an appealing destination for prospective students and faculty alike. As Rice continues to enhance its programs and resources, I believe it will draw even more talent and perspectives, enriching the campus experience and fostering a global community that reflects the diversity of our world.

A: Community, diversity, excellence and innovation.

Q: What else have we not talked about that merits discussion?

A: One topic we haven’t discussed yet is the importance of mentorship in my journey at Rice. I’ve been fortunate to have an amazing manager who greatly influenced my professional development. They have provided invaluable guidance, helped me navigate challenges and encouraged me to take on new projects that have expanded my skill set. Additionally, I find the various events and traditions at Rice to be an integral part of the community.
