Q: How long have you worked at Rice?
A: I’ve worked at Rice coming up on three years in January.
Q: What is your favorite part about working for the university?
A: My favorite part of being here is the opportunity to connect with so many people and participate in the various events across campus. Rice offers such a wealth of chances to engage and be part of so many special moments with employees and students.
In my new position, I have the privilege of leading a fantastic team of student employees. Some students assist with our social media channels, while others are food ambassadors in a new program that chef Kyle Hardwick and I have launched. This role is particularly meaningful to me because, like them, I began my journey as a student worker at my alma mater and that experience opened many doors for my professional growth. I know that this experience will do the same for them. Working with Rice students has been incredibly rewarding.
Q: What do you want people to know about living in Houston?
A: I’ve traveled to many places, but Houston holds a special place in my heart. Like Rice, Houston is a vibrant, ethnically diverse city. I have a newfound appreciation for the city I was born in after moving away and coming back. Houston has fantastic local businesses, incredible food (some of my favorites being Gatlin’s Fins & Feathers and Traveler’s Table) and plenty of weekend activities. Home to the Houston Rockets and Texans as well as NASA and the iconic Beyoncé, it’s hard to imagine a city that offers more. In Houston, there’s always something happening, making it a place that truly has it all!
Q: What do you do in your downtime?
A: I love discovering new restaurants on the weekends and exploring parks, particularly those by the bayous. Cooking is another passion of mine. While I sometimes head out in the evenings to dance salsa and cumbia or catch an Astros game, I have to admit that I often use my downtime to catch up on rest and recharge for the week ahead.
Q: What’s your favorite spot on campus to show someone?
A: I love Cohen House. It’s my go-to spot for lunch and catching up with colleagues. The fountain in the back is so stunning and perfect for a photo opportunity. Plus, Valhalla is a favorite among so many on campus — who can resist that dollar wine?
Q: What’s the most exciting time of year for you as it relates to Rice?
A: This year was my first experience with new student move-in, and I’ve always heard it’s a cornerstone of the Rice experience — now I totally understand why. The excitement that goes into move-in creates a unique energy that you can truly feel all around you. As a staff member, it was very special to be part of this moment and welcome our new Owls to campus.
Q: What’s the one thing that makes Rice special to you?
A: For me, it’s the community that has supported me throughout my time at Rice. When I first started, I was a young professional, and I’ve had so many amazing mentors who have helped me grow along the way. The connections I’ve made and the people who have gone out of their way to support me have made this place truly special. A special shoutout to the folks in Public Affairs where I got my start as well as Richard Baker, Luziris Pineda Turi, Beth Leaver and so many others.
Q: If you could be Sammy The Owl for a day, what would you do?
A: Funny story: When I first started in Public Affairs, I almost had the opportunity to be Sammy a couple of times for the events I coordinated. If I had the chance to be Sammy The Owl today, I’d probably surprise all the students I work with by showing up in their classes.
Q: How would you describe your experience as a Rice employee?
A: My experience has been so rewarding. The community here is what sets us apart, and Rice has offered a supportive environment for me to pursue my master’s degree. I’m just a few courses away from graduating. Working here has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally, which demonstrates the university’s commitment to its employees.
Q: Where do you see Rice in 25 years?
A: In 25 years, I envision Rice as a globally recognized university leading the way in advancements in medicine and technology, especially in artificial intelligence. I believe our institution is uniquely positioned to tackle some of the most pressing challenges ahead in Houston and globally, particularly climate change.
Q: Describe Rice in four words or less.
A: Collaborative, innovative, forward-thinking and creative.
