Q: How long have you worked at Rice?

A: Nine years — six of which were during high school and college when I worked as an accounting assistant and three years as an adult.

Q: What is your favorite part about working for the university?

A: I love all the people I interact with in all departments across campus and at the Jones Graduate School of Business. Everyone is such a joy to work with.

Q: What do you want people to know about living in Houston?

A: Houston is incredibly diverse and such a fun city to engage and interact with. I encourage everyone to explore what Houston has to offer!

Q: What do you do in your downtime?

A: I enjoy reading, walking and spending time with my family.

Q: What’s your favorite spot on campus to show someone?

A: The James Turrell “Twilight Epiphany” Skyspace is a unique feature to show someone while interacting with the art installation.

Q: What’s the most exciting time of year for you as it relates to Rice?

A: I enjoy graduation season, seeing all the students elated that finals are over and the energy that illuminates from them as they cross the graduation stage.

Q: What’s the one thing that makes Rice special to you?

A: The fact that if you have worked here for 20 years, the university dedicates a tree to you after you retire. Somewhere on campus, there is a tree with your legacy. That is incredibly special.

Q: If you could be Sammy The Owl for a day, what would you do?

A: I would engage with the students and take selfies with everyone.

Q: How would you describe your experience as a Rice employee?

A: My mom has worked here for 26 years, and I have had the unique privilege to “grow up” on campus since I was a little kid. I have been able to enjoy seeing the campus grow throughout the years. As an employee, I have a positive experience by being able to smile and say hi to anyone who walks past and be greeted with a smile back.

Q: Where do you see Rice in 25 years?

A: I see Rice’s campus beautified within 25 years and continuing to add value to the lives of students, staff and faculty.

Q: Describe Rice in four words or less.

A: Unique, tradition-filled, special and impactful.
