Q: How long have you worked at Rice?
A: Seven years overall, including a little more than one year at the Kinder Institute.
Q: What is your favorite part about working for the university?
A: I have the privilege and responsibility of working with a team at the Kinder Institute, which is dedicated to improving the lives of Houstonians, particularly those who don’t share in the prosperity and opportunities many of us enjoy. We live in a world-class city, but addressing our shortcomings is critical to ensuring it maintains that status. A bonus perk: I get to spend a lot of time on a beautiful campus.
Q: What do you want people to know about living in Houston?
A: Besides being my hometown, Houston is the only place I’ve called home that really feels like it. There are lots of factors working together to make that so, including our often-touted cultural diversity, which is a positive influence on so many other aspects of life here.
I do have one favorite thing about Houston that isn’t often cited as such: the weather (extreme events aside). I’m from the Midwest and will take the heat and humidity over shivering in the snow.
Q: What do you do in your downtime?
A: My favorite is playing par-3 golf with my friends.
Q: What’s your favorite spot on campus to show someone?
A: Not one particular spot (well, Valhalla), but I like showing my dog Gama the squirrels. I imagine she thinks there is no greater place on Earth.
Q: What’s the most exciting time of year for you as it relates to Rice?
A: The first week of classes in August. As the students return, so does the energy.
Q: What’s the one thing that makes Rice special to you?
A: The people. Lots of sharp folks doing impactful work.
Q: If you could be Sammy The Owl for a day, what would you do?
A: Look forward to taking the costume off and getting in the shower.
Q: How would you describe your experience as a Rice employee?
A: I feel fortunate and grateful to be able to do work that provides personal fulfillment in addition to a paycheck.
Q: Where do you see Rice in 25 years?
A: Bigger and stronger, due in no small part to remaining steadfast in its efforts to become a more inclusive and equitable institution.
Q: Describe Rice University in four words or less.
A: Moving forward, soaring higher.
