Rice Office of Public Affairs expands government relations, media relations teams

The Rice University Office of Public Affairs is proud to announce the addition of two new hires and a promotion, enhancing the university’s capacity to engage with government, media and stakeholders across campus and beyond.

Joel Resendez

Joel Resendez joins as the university’s first director of state government relations, marking a significant step in Rice’s efforts to raise its profile in Austin and secure support for key policy initiatives and research funding. With expertise in legislative affairs and strategic advice, Resendez brings a wealth of experience from his time as committee director for Sen. Brandon Creighton, chairman of the Texas Senate Committee on Education.

Before the Texas Senate, Resendez served as the government relations coordinator for the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas, Rice’s state association, and as legislative director for Rep. J.M. Lozano.

Marcy de Luna

Seasoned journalist Marcy de Luna has joined the news and media relations team as a media relations specialist. With a focus on science and engineering, de Luna will play a key role in promoting Rice’s research and accomplishments to a diverse range of media outlets. Her experience at energy company SLB as a corporate communications specialist and as a reporter for prominent publications such as the Houston Chronicle and Reuters will enhance Rice’s visibility in the media landscape.

In addition to the new hires, Arie Wilson Passwaters has been promoted to senior editor within the news and media relations team. Since joining Rice in 2005, Wilson Passwaters has played a vital role in managing editorial processes for Rice News and @Rice, the alumni newsletter. Her new role will also include overseeing the editorial direction of Inside Rice, the university’s new internal newsletter.
