As we experienced with this month’s bone-chilling temperatures, the weather outside is frightening. Yet Rice Owls’ hearts are delighting when it comes to charitable giving for people in need.
Rice University’s Emergency Medical Services (REMS) and Housing and Dining departments have teamed up for a winter clothing drive set for Jan. 22-31.
The drive, which has been an ongoing tradition for more than 10 years, will benefit Star of Hope Mission. The organization is dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless men, women and their children through structured programs that focus on spiritual growth, education, employment, life management and recovery from substance abuse.
“Our annual clothing drive is an important way to engage members of our campus in giving back to the surrounding Houston community,” said Sid Rich junior Elizabeth Pan, REMS community outreach and senior lieutenant with REMS. “This small act of kindness can really make a difference for someone in need.”
Suggested items include the following:
- Pillows (preferably new)
