Rice University’s Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies recently hosted its graduate student resource fair at the BioScience Research Collaborative to introduce graduate and postdoctoral students to the resources they might find helpful. Community members noshed on complimentary breakfast tacos as they learned more about various campus departments, services, resources and community partners. Nearly 30 groups set up tables to greet the students with food, games and swag items and to inform them of their offerings.

One of those groups was the Center for Career Development. Raylea Rideau, the center’s associate director of career development, explained how this event impacts both the graduate population and the people who support it.

“Summertime is when students are getting acclimated to campus and getting readjusted before the start of the fall,” Rideau said. “The resource fair allows them to meet staff in person, to know a friendly face of whatever office they decide to explore and to have those one-on-one discussions to learn more about what each office can provide.”

She summarized the long-term value that the resource fair provides for all types of students’ needs.

“Rice definitely has that community of care aspect, so letting them know that wherever they are, whatever assistance they need, there are offices that will provide the support they need to be successful while they are here.”
